In India, childrens’ education and their academic performance is a major concern of parents. Rightfully, in a developing country like India, education is the single most important ladder available in the society for the upliftment of the individual and the family. Majority of the parents and families will go to any length, to help their children progress academically. When that does not happen, there is significant distress in the family and many times, there for want of knowledge and guidance, there will be inappropriate emotional reactions and actions, which may complicate the matter. At Dyslexia clinic, we have created an assessment module ‘Pathfinder’, to systematically evaluate academic backwardness, to understand the causes and provide appropriate help.
The common causes that underlie Academic backwardness are:
Interest and ability… Do they match?
If they match…
High achievement, satisfaction, proficiency, creativity and human excellence.
If they don't match…
Frustration, disappointment, demoralization, underachievement, inferiority complex and disillusionment.
Assessment and guidance system for children with academic difficulties (Scholastic Backwardness)
Academic performance of school going children varies from each other because of their differing intellectual emotional social physical abilities and disabilities and the characteristics of the settings where they live and learn.
Some children have significant economic difficulties and are described to have scholastic backwardness performing poorly in one hour more School subjects regularly over a period of years.
The academic backwardness is not a medical problem, medical and developmental conditions may contribute to it. It may be related to physical health problems (eg. Hearing difficulties, short sight) or psychological problems (eg. Anxiety, fear, depression and hyperactivity) or neurodevelopmental conditions (eg. Mental Retardation, specific learning disabilities in reading (dyslexia), spelling, writing and mathematics, autism).
Dyslexia clinic offers an assessment and guidance system called 'Pathfinder' to help children with scholastic backwardness.
Children who are identified as having scholastic backwardness will be assessed by a multi-disciplinary team, which includes a Psychiatrist, a Clinical Psychologist and a Special Educator. Depending on the findings, if needed, further assessment will be done by Occupational Therapist, Neurologist, ENT or Eye specialist and appropriate guidance and counselling will be given.
The goal of this program is to identify the problem areas accurately, so that teachers, parents and the children can understand the reasons for educational underachievement in a scientific way. Remedial measures and intervention programs for the children, as recommended by the multidisciplinary team, will be arranged, whenever possible.
